On the evening of Wednesday, January 8, 2025, an inspiring gathering took place in Washington D.C., as the Annual Black & Latino Mobility/Transportation Professionals and Allies Reception brought together a vibrant community of professionals, advocates, and allies from across the mobility and transportation sectors. This much-anticipated event offered a dynamic platform to celebrate diversity, foster meaningful connections, and spark innovative ideas for the future of transportation.

A Night of Networking and Collaboration

The reception buzzed with energy as attendees from a broad spectrum of organizations, including government agencies, private companies, nonprofits and academic institutions came together to share their insights and experiences. Representatives hailed from prestigious organizations such as the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Urban League, auto manufacturers, rideshare companies, and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), among many others.

From engaging conversations to new professional connections, the event created an invaluable opportunity to bridge gaps, share knowledge, and build partnerships that will help shape the future of equitable mobility.

Diversity Driving Innovation

The reception highlighted the pivotal role diversity plays in driving innovation across the transportation and mobility landscape. Attendees celebrated the contributions of Black and Latino professionals in shaping policies, advancing clean transportation technologies, and addressing equity challenges in communities nationwide.

"It's been a great chance to learn, hear more about what's going on in the space, meet some new people, see a lot of old friends, too, and also show my support for the efforts that EVHybridNoire and the other partners are making," said Sue Gander, Director of the Electric School Bus Initiative at World Resources Institute.

Several members of the E-Mobility Fellowship Program’s 2024-2025 cohort were also in attendance, seizing the opportunity to engage with industry leaders and expand their professional networks. Salah Mahmoud, a Junior at Virginia State University, reflected on the significance of the event, sharing, “At the TRB reception, the part of the event that stood out to me the most was seeing people come from different professions all in one space and connect with each other.”

He also highlighted the value of building relationships within the fellowship itself. “I was able to connect and collaborate with a fellow from our program, Brandon Poplar,” he said, referring to a student at Delaware State University. Moments like these underscored the reception’s role in fostering mentorship, collaboration, and career growth among emerging leaders in the mobility space.

Recently, Dr. Shelley Francis, of EVNoire, took the stage in Detroit, Michigan, to participate in an important conversation on “Growing a Diverse EV Workforce” at the annual Roadmap Conference This engaging panel brought together thought leaders from across the sector, spotlighting innovative ways to unlock quality jobs and develop workforce opportunities, with a special focus on historically underserved communities.
Unlocking Workforce Development for Under Represented Communities
During the panel, Dr. Francis emphasized the importance of including diverse voices in the EV workforce. "To truly build an equitable workforce in the EV industry, we must focus on removing barriers and creating pathways for historically underrepresented communities," Dr. Francis stated. Her message reinforced EVNoire’s commitment to equity and inclusion as the EV industry continues to expand and adapt.

Cornell Johnson of the Center for Energy Workforce Development, who discussed programs that make training and advancement in the energy sector more accessible.
Devashree Saha from the World Resources Institute, who spoke on global trends in workforce development and their impact on the American workforce.
Jennifer Mefford from the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program, who shared insights on the specialized training needed to support the rapid expansion of EV infrastructure.
Together, the panelists outlined how, with the right investments in training and resources, the EV industry can provide access to high-quality, well-paying jobs in communities that have traditionally been overlooked.

Accelerating Workplace Charging at Forth Roadmap Conference

EVNoire staff engaged with hundreds of attendees at the 2024 Forth Roadmap Conference last month in Detroit, Michigan. We proudly exhibited two key initiatives aimed at advancing electrification in the workplace: the Charge@Work program and the EVAL Certification Program.
Charge@Work serves as a workplace charging concierge, offering comprehensive support for workplaces, public officials, and community leaders looking to implement electric vehicle (EV) charging programs. Through the program, EVNoire helps organizations plan every aspect of their EV charging needs. For those ready to get started, the Charge@Work Project Builder is a free, user-friendly tool that guides businesses through the process—selecting chargers, collaborating with utilities, estimating costs, and more. The Charging Resource Center provides additional information to help workplaces seamlessly integrate EV charging into their operations.
In addition, EVNoire staff showcased the EVAL (Electric Vehicle Adoption Leadership) Certification program, which is backed by the U.S. Department of Energy. EVAL is designed to assist, certify, and celebrate employers dedicated to advancing clean transportation opportunities for their workforce. This national certification recognizes companies not only for providing EV charging but also for promoting sustainable commuting options, such as carpooling, biking, and public transportation incentives.
The 2024 Forth Roadmap Conference was a great opportunity for EVNoire staff to connect with hundreds of professionals in the transportation industry, exchanging ideas and promoting innovative solutions for cleaner, more equitable transportation systems.

EVNoire Champions Transportation Electrification to Virginia House and Senate Members

EVNoire’s commitment to advancing equitable and inclusive multimodal transportation was front and center at the 2024 Virginia Governor’s Transportation Conference, where Terry Travis, Managing Partner and Co-Founder of EVNoire, participated in a pivotal panel discussion on transportation electrification. The panel delved into the transformative potential of electric transportation in Virginia. Travis shared the stage with esteemed leaders, including:

The panel addressed members of the Virginia General Assembly’s House and Senate Joint Committee on Transportation, offering strategic perspectives on the future of transportation electrification. Terry Travis highlighted the multifaceted benefits of multimodal transportation solutions and underscored the importance of legislative support for equitable electrification.
“Legislation is key in addressing the existing gaps in transportation and mobility while amplifying education and outreach,” said Travis. “By doing so, we open the doors to economic and workforce development opportunities that benefit everyone in the Commonwealth.” His message highlighted EVNoire’s dedication to creating pathways that connect policy, education and workforce development with the diverse needs of Virginians.
As members of the Electrifying Virginia Advisory Board, both Travis and Alleyn Harned showcased their collaborative efforts in advancing Virginia’s electric mobility landscape through the Electrifying Virginia partnership. This coalition of community organizations, businesses, advocacy groups, government officials, and other electric mobility stakeholders is committed to making EVs a cornerstone of Virginia’s future.
The Governor’s conference provided a platform for key stakeholders, including legislators, industry leaders, and advocates, to engage in meaningful discussions on shaping the state’s clean transportation future.
Terry Travis also shared compelling insights into the essential role that community engagement plays in building sustainable and accessible transportation systems. “Virginia’s path to sustainable and accessible transportation relies on genuine community engagement. We need to encourage active participation from communities to shape solutions that reflect their unique needs and experiences,” he stated. This perspective resonated with the conference’s audience, reinforcing the importance of policies that prioritize accessibility and proactive participation.

In 2024’s third quarter alone, sales saw an 11% year-over-year increase, reaching record highs in both volume and market share. This growth has been driven by greater model availability, advancements in battery technology, and strategic policy support, solidifying EVs as a mainstream option for consumers.
The Economic Promise of Electric Vehicles
The rapid expansion of the EV industry represents more than a technological shift; it’s an economic boon that is reshaping the American manufacturing landscape. Recent data from the Environmental Defense Fund and WSP USA shows investments in EV manufacturing over the past nine years have surged to $199 billion.
The domestic production of EVs, along with their batteries and other components, has created more than 200,000 new EV-related jobs in the U.S. over the last nine years and could potentially generate up to 931,000 additional jobs across various sectors. These opportunities extend to workers from a variety of educational and employment backgrounds, with occupations in research and development, manufacturing, maintenance, infrastructure development, sales, training, and more.
EVNoire has witnessed firsthand how local economies can prosper when EV manufacturing is backed by a skilled workforce with expertise in infrastructure maintenance, ensuring sustained growth in electrification efforts. Investments in battery plants and EV assembly facilities are not only beneficial for regions already known for traditional automotive manufacturing but also present a valuable opportunity for states that have not historically been associated with the auto industry to step into EV-related manufacturing.
Empowering Equity through Electric Mobility
The social benefits of EV adoption include reduced transportation costs, improved air quality, and healthier living environments—critical factors for communities that have disproportionately borne the brunt of pollution and climate impacts. By working with transit agencies, community developers, and public health organizations to encourage transportation electrification, e-mobility can be a vehicle for social equity.
One of the most promising innovations in EV technology is bidirectional charging, which enables EVs to supply energy back to the grid or power homes during outages. This capability offers significant resilience benefits, allowing communities to maintain energy stability during natural disasters or periods of peak demand. By acting as mobile energy storage units, EVs contribute to grid flexibility and energy independence, enhancing community resilience and reducing the impact of power outages.
The Environmental Benefits of Driving Electric
The transportation sector is the largest contributor of direct greenhouse gas emissions according to the Environmental Protection Agency. With over half of the emissions from the transportation sector resulting from the combustion of gasoline, diesel fuel, and other petroleum-based products, transitioning from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles will significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Reduced emissions have tangible public health benefits associated with cleaner air, including lower rates of respiratory problems, particularly in urban areas. The International Council on Clean Transportation found that EVs reduce life-cycle GHG emissions by 37%-45% over the lifetime of average medium-size battery-electric vehicles.
Driving Electric Helps Consumers Save Money
Beyond their environmental and social impact, EVs also offer significant financial benefits for drivers. One of the most notable advantages being the reduction in fuel costs–the average EV driver will spend 60% less to power their vehicle than drivers of gas powered vehicles. With more than 200,000 public charging ports available nationwide and more being installed every day, convenient and reliable EV charging options are more accessible than ever.
EVs also have fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes, resulting in lower maintenance costs than traditional gas powered vehicles. Tax incentives, rebates, and state-level incentives can also lower the upfront cost of purchasing an EV, making them more accessible to a wider range of consumers.
